AFSA April Member Forum

Join us on Wednesday, April 1, for AFSA’s monthly members forum featuring University of Virginia political science professor and former Batten School of Leadership dean Allan Stam.

Professor Stam brings a rare combination of academic and real-world experience to the conversation. A former U.S. Army Special Forces communications specialist and Army Reserve armor officer, he has built a distinguished career studying war outcomes, war duration, mediation, and alliance politics. He earned his BA from Cornell and his MA and PhD from the University of Michigan, later teaching at Yale and Dartmouth before being recruited to UVA in 2014 to lead the Batten School.

In this conversation, Professor Stam will reflect on how American universities arrived at their current cultural and intellectual climate, why so many moderate and conservative faculty members feel increasingly marginalized, and what can be done to restore a healthier culture of intellectual diversity and free speech on campus.

Stam also serves on the UVA Heterodox Academy Executive Committee and is an active member of both the Cornell AFSA group and the Jefferson Council at UVA. This promises to be a thoughtful and timely conversation with a faculty insider.
